Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, shortly after releasing the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results, revealed that candidates could only access their grades through an online portal.

In an address at Moi Girls High School in Eldoret on Monday, the CS indicated that the results will only be accessed via the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) portal under the URL link; results.knec.ac.ke.

The CS explained that the Ministry resolved to chart this course to prevent candidates and their parents from suffering inconveniences experienced during the release of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

He further assured that engineers had worked round the clock to ensure that the results system would work efficiently.

"A candidate can also access the individual 2023 KCSE online through a link on the KNEC website. This time around, we have worked with the engineers and experts and we are sure that the website and this particular system is working such that Kenyans will not be able to have the kind of inconvenience that we had last time when using a service provider," he explained.

"You will be required to enter your candidate index number and the names as per the data for the 2023 KCSE examinations. The results will be available immediately after this exercise."

For decades, Kenyans had relied on the SMS code service provided by mobile service providers at every examination cycle. The SMS code was provided alongside the online portal.

In November 2023, however, the system suffered delays leading to anxiety amongst parents and candidates.

KNEC, in a later apology statement, revealed that the system had suffered a glitch and immediately deployed its technical team to handle it.

"Greetings, we apologize for the delay in accessing KCPE 2023 results. We will update you once they are available," read the statement at the time.

The SMS, which was regularly sent to the USSD code 40054, charged Ksh25 for every transaction which the public lamented was exorbitant.

Parents and teachers had also lamented that the delay in the results system had caused anxiety among the learners.
