The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on the night of Saturday, January 13, announced that it was closing the Kisii Highway in the Kaplong-Kisii area.

In a statement, KeNHA announced that the closure was necessitated by heavy rainfall that had been witnessed in the area.

The heavy downpour caused flooding of the road at Kiposonoi Rover Bridge forcing KeNHA to act.

The whole area of Mugeni which is located between Sotik and Chebilat became flooded rendering the busy highway impassable.

“Water levels have risen above the bridge rendering passage unsafe,” KeNHA cautioned motorists.

“KeNHA staff have been on the ground monitoring the water levels the whole day and were earlier guiding motorists on the safe crossing sections.”

To safeguard motorists and other public members, KeNHA offered alternative routes to those plying the area.

For vehicles heading to Chebilat and Keroka, they were directed to use Kaplong-Sotik-Roret-Ikonge-Chebilat-Keroka Road.

While the alternative route is longer, KeNHA remarked it had been paved to ensure seamless travel.

Passengers heading to Kisii were forced to use a diversion by taking the Kaplong-Sotik-Roret-Ikonge-Kisii route.

On Saturday, sections of Nairobi City also experienced flooding due to a similar heavy downpour.

Kenya is experiencing the third month of heavy downpours with the government rolling out mitigation measures for the El-Nino.
