The Nigeria High Commission (NHC) has advised all its citizens in Kenya to be vigilant and avoid unnecessary movements following the murder incident in Roysambu where its national was alleged to be the main suspect.
An official at the Commission confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that the statement was released to ease the tension sparked by the murder of the 20-year-old Jomo Kenyatta University of Arts and Technology (JKUAT) student Rita Waeni Muendo.
Nigerian citizens were further urged to remain calm and continue to be law-abiding.
"Nigerians are advised to be vigilant and to avoid unnecessary movements even as investigations are ongoing and formal communication from the host law enforcement authorities are awaited," the statement read in part.
The Commission also warned Kenyans to desist from sharing disinformation about Nigerians online and only post information that is credible and accurate.
"Furthermore, we wish to implore well-meaning members of the public to desist from disinformation and to refer all enquiries to appropriate channels to ascertain accurate information."
The High Commission warned online users against propelling false information being shared, confirming that necessary action would be carried out in line with the law.
"The High Commission is also taking proper note of the channels through which such disinformation is being shared and would like to assure that necessary action, within the scope of international law and extant legal provisions of the host authorities, will be invoked as appropriate."
Muendo's murder has gained nationwide attention, with observers calling for police to dispense justice to the family and bring the culprits to book.
The student's dismembered body was found this past Sunday at an apartment in Roysambu following a night out with a suspect, who was captured on CCTV footage wearing a cap and glasses.
In the footage, the suspect was captured picking a key from a shopkeeper before hurriedly leaving. Days later, a man was arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after members of the public raised alarm over his resemblance with the man captured on CCTV.
