Nelson Nduki, the Chief Executive Officer of Super Metro Company Limited, has revealed that the company is yet to ascertain the cause of the early morning crash that claimed 17 lives.

Speaking in an interview with Kenyans.co.ke, Nduki noted that the bus that was involved in an accident was attached to Super Metro Company Limited's sister company, Super Coach Executive Limited, which handles long-distance travel.

While sending condolences to the families of the deceased, the CEO explained that the company always follows regulations as outlined in Kenyan Law and that the accident was a first.

Two drivers, who were onboard the ill-fated bus at the time of the crash at around 2:30am on Monday, perished.

"We send our condolences to the families. It is very difficult because we have never experienced this and we have followed all the regulations as per the Traffic Act. We had two drivers. The drivers who were seated in the front seats passed away," stated a remorseful Nduki.

"It is very unfortunate that this kind of accident can happen particularly to one that is related to our company. We are saddened. We have sent our team there because there are individuals who are hospitalised."

The CEO, as a result, revealed that his office sent representatives to the accident scene and is awaiting investigations from the police to ascertain the cause of the crash.

"We do not know what happened. Unfortunately, the drivers and conductors who were seated at the front passed away. They were the only ones who could tell us exactly what happened," he added.

"Until now, we have not been able to know the cause of the accident and we are waiting for the police investigating officer, maybe through their own investigations, they can tell us exactly what transpired."

Whereas Super Coach Executive Limited handles long-distance travel, Super Metro Company Limited periodically covers long distances outside Nairobi during festive seasons such as Christmas and Easter weekends. The latter company primarily operates within the Nairobi Metropolis.

The accident occurred along the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway involving the Super Coach bus from Kampala and a lorry. It was a head-on collision.

A total of 53 passengers suffered injuries as a result of the accident, Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Mwangi confirmed.
