A Kenyan man wanted by the Massachusetts Police for killing his girlfriend at an American airport escaped from the Muthaiga Police Station on Wednesday.

Kevin Adam Kinyajui Kang'ethe, who was arrested in Kenya over the alleged killing of his girlfriend and  dumping her body in a Boston Airport, is said to have slipped away from police custody at the Muthaiga Police Station.

The Nairobi Police Boss, Adamson Bungei said he rushed to the station when he learned of the escape. “We have arrested the officers who were on duty when he escaped to explain how it happened. It is just embarrassing to us,” he said.

Reports indicate that Kang'ethe met with a man who claimed to be his lawyer and left him at the station, before running out.

The police reportedly chased after the suspect in an attempt to re-apprehend him. The suspect however, slipped their grasp. The suspect was going to be extradited to the US to face trial in the case.

Kang'ethe is the main suspect in the murder Margaret Mbitu, his girlfriend who was residing in Massachusetts before her death. Her body was found inside a car in a parking garage of a Boston airport in November 2023.

Kang'ethe had gone missing for three months after the incident with the Massachusetts's Police placing him on red notice.

A red notice is a request to all law enforcement officers globally to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender or any legal action

However, he was arrested by Kenyan police on January 29 while at a club in the Westlands Area, after the police were tipped off by the public.

It is alleged that Kang'ethe and the woman were in a relationship which ended before he requested to meet her at the airport before he flew back to Nairobi.

Details of the case revealed that the late Mbitu sustained knife wounds on the neck, face and on her side near the chest area and was pronounced dead on arrival at a Boston Hospital after the police discovered her body at the airport.
