Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has placed two parcels of land it owns in Kigali, Rwanda, on sale.

In a notice carried in a local daily on Tuesday, the institution of higher learning revealed that it was selling the two parcels collectively measuring 45,479 sqm.

"Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology intends to dispose of the parcels of land measuring approximately 45,479 sqm situated at Kigali City, Kicukiro District, Gahanga Village, Karembure Locality. The University now invites sealed tenders from eligible candidates to purchase the said parcels," read the notice in part.

The sale comes roughly four years after JKUAT officially winded down its campus in Kigali in 2020.

At the time, Council Chairman Paul Kanyari noted that the shutdown was done in line with a directive from the government.

As a result of the closure, the university, which has a student population of over 30,000, transferred some of its learners to their Juja campus while the rest were taken to other institutions of higher learning in Rwanda.

Years before, lawmakers had raised concerns over operational costs to keep the campus in Rwanda going. JKUAT had spent Ksh21 million to set up the campus.

Tendering Process

In its notice, JKUAT directed interested buyers to visit the institution's Department of Procurement at JKUAT, Main Campus, to inspect and obtain tender documents.

The documents are also available on the university's official website.

Separately, JKUAT also announced that its process of leasing two parcels of land measuring approximately 2.013 acres was underway.

The lease period is 10 years, renewable under a lease agreement.

"Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology intends to lease the two parcels of land measuring approximately 2.013 acres situated at Jipe Close – Lavington Estate, Nairobi City County. The University now invites sealed tenders from eligible candidates to lease the said property," read the notice in part.

The notice instructs interested applicants to submit their applications before Wednesday, February 28th.
