Govt Announces Mass Auction of Goods Abandoned by 115 Businessmen at Border Posts

The Customs and Border Control Department has announced its intention to put up goods abandoned at border towns on auction.

The department published a Gazette Notice on Friday indicating that the goods, some of whose owners were unknown, were lying at the Kisumu, Malaba, Busia, and Isebania border posts.

The notice further indicated that the goods would be auctioned between March 20 and March 22, 2024.

"Notice is given unless the undermentioned goods are entered and removed from the custody of the customs warehouse keeper Kisumu, Malaba, Busia, Isebania within thirty (30) days of this notice, they will be treated as abandoned and will be sold by public auction as follows; Kisumu on 20th March, 2024 , Malaba on 21st March, 2024, Busia on 22nd March 2024 and Isebania on 22nd March, 2024, respectively," read the notice in part.

As a result, the State invited interested bidders to view the goods at respective warehouses between March 18 and March 19, 2024, during office hours.

The goods include; cutlery sets, toys, engines, rims, air conditioners, car parts, watering cans, unassembled metallic seat parts, and laptop bags.

Others are; airplane tyres, yard tools like spades, mitumba clothing, ethanol, sodium cyanide and alcoholic drinks like beer.

Busia one-stop border post warehouse is currently holding goods belonging to 11 businessmen while Malaba is housing goods belonging to 31 traders.

Meanwhile, goods owned by another 19 traders are currently being kept at the Kisumu warehouse while the largest consignment from 53 traders is currently being kept at the Isebania warehouse.

The notice was signed by Western region enforcement manager Brian Mwachiro.

This comes days after a recent auction exercise by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) targeting to dispose of cars held at the Port of Mombasa.

A catalogue of the goods showed that the taxman auctioned vehicles ranging from standard passenger cars to buses.

The cheapest vehicle placed on auction was a Suzuki Alto whose bid started at Ksh169,333.
