Pastor Dorcas Rigathi was overwhelmed to tears as she narrated the story of a widow in Migori County who was forced to sell her body to raise her child.
While delivering a speech during a meeting with religious leaders in Kilifi County on Thursday, February 29, the pastor expressed her profound sadness at what the widow had to endure for the sake of her family.
She wondered why such things were happening yet there were religious groups who would have intervened in such situations. According to her, religious groups needed to step up.
While narrating the story, she often took breaks and wiped tears from her eyes.
Moved by her narration, some of the religious leaders could also be seen using handkerchiefs to wipe their tears.
"I went to Migori and a widow there was selling her body so that she can be able to raise her child. And we still talk about religion! It is very bad and that is why I have been looking for ways through which we can be able to help our women.
"Just ask yourself, what if it was your mother doing that to raise your school fees? As a Church, together with Muslims, come up with plans to uplift our women so that they can help their children," she stated as she wiped her tears.
Further, she explained that she was moved by the story of the widow given that she had been raised by one.
The DP's spouse recounted the hardships her mother had to undergo to raise her and her siblings after the death of their father.
She revealed that some of their relatives turned against them, asserting that the experience was behind her driving force to make things better.
"It only took two years after my father died for our land to be sold. We were chased and went to my maternal grandmother. We were also chased from there and went to live in the ghetto.
"That is why I do not care which religion you belong to, you are my sister and brother," she stated.
