President Ruto has revealed that Kenya and Uganda will be opening the new one-stop border post in Suam, TransNzoia County, in a few weeks.
Speaking at the opening of the 5th East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) special assembly, the President explained that the two Heads of State will open the border post, which has been under construction.
“In a couple of weeks, President Museveni and I will be launching the one-stop border posts in Suam, a border between Kenya and Uganda.
According to Ruto, the border post was constructed using funds consolidated and sourced by both governments.
Furthermore, he revealed that by the time of launching the Kitale-Endebess-Suam road border post, the road connecting both countries will be complete.
The President applauded the cooperation of all countries within the East African Community (EAC), stating that the EALA was key in promoting the framework creation.
He proceeded to explain that the completion of the border post was one of the processes towards the elimination of the elimination of trade barriers and facilitating trade in EAC.
“These frameworks also provide for the elimination of non-tariff barriers and the implementation of a single customs territory, one-stop border posts as well as the facilitation of the regional and national trade information portals, explained Ruto.
The post, which has been under construction since August 2023, will now be accessible as the third border post between Kenya and Uganda.
Currently, both countries utilise the Busia and Malaba borders for customs activities between them.
Additionally, Ruto stated that the faster clearance of trucks at border posts had reduced congestion by 84%.
Further, he revealed that intra-EAC trade had been ranked first among trading blocs in Africa.
Uganda's government was also working on the crossing at Suam by also upgrading the Suam-Bukwo-Kapchorwa road, which is set to improve the regional economy.
