Police officers in Meru County are investigating the demise of a 23-year-old student from Kenya Methodist University whose body was found decomposing inside his house in Imenti North.
Reports indicated that the student was reported missing by his family on February 29, 2024, as efforts to locate him were futile.
The body was, however, found four days later inside his house by his landlady who contacted police officers about the incident.
According to the landlady, she was hanging her clothes when she noticed flies coming from inside the house.
Curious about the matter, the landlady peeped through the window and identified a body hanging from the roof.
She contacted the police who were quickly dispatched to the scene.
Further, the officers confirmed that there was no suicide note alongside the body.
Upon documentation, the cops transferred the student's body to Meru General Hospital Mortuary.
The detectives will be seeking to establish the cause of death through a post-mortem examination to determine if the student died by suicide or if it was staged managed.
The incident highlights the recent cases involving the deaths of students during their stay on campus.
This has led to lobby groups calling for urgent interventions to address issues of mental health among the youth.
A study conducted by the Kenya Demographic Health Survey 2022, showed that women aged 15-49 were more depressed than men.
Several factors attributed to the rise of mental health issues include relationships, physical illness, substance abuse, death of a loved one, unemployment, and poverty among others.
