Moi International Airport has been recognised as the best airport in Africa which processes traffic below 2 million.

In an award issued by the Airports Council International (ACI World), the Mombasa-based airport was named the best in the continent for its outstanding customer service.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), in a statement issued on Wednesday, March 14, noted that the award was based on a survey conducted by the international institution for passengers who used the airport last year.

According to the authority, the surveys were done upon arrival and departure at the airport.

"The prestigious Airports Council International (ACI World) has awarded Moi International Airport (MIA), Mombasa, the 2023 Best Airport by Size and Region in the Under 2 million Passenger Per Year category for Africa.

"ACI World's ASQ Awards are an annual celebration of excellence in airport customer experience, gauged through Departure and Arrival Surveys. Since its inception in 2006, the ASQ program has solidified its reputation as the leading airport passenger satisfaction benchmark, with participation from more than 400 airports in 109 countries," read the statement in part.

Also named alongside the Kenyan airport were Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (Zanzibar, Tanzania) and Ivato International Airport (Antananarivo, Madagascar).

On its part, the international body commended the efforts of the Kenyan airport in ensuring that customers get quality services, noting that Kenya was becoming a benchmark for others globally.

"Congratulations to the whole team at Moi International Airport in Mombasa on their success in the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards. Your dedication to excellence in customer experience sets a benchmark for airports worldwide! Keep setting the bar high," ACI World Director General, Luis Felipe de Oliveira stated.

This is the third time the Mombasa-based airport has won the prestigious award. Moi International Airport has previously won in the category in 2021 and 2022.

Following the third consecutive award, KAA affirmed to travellers that it would continue implementing measures that ensure customers get the world-class experience they deserve. This strategy, they believe, will place Kenya as the benchmark for quality customer experience globally.

"This accolade reaffirms our commitment to providing exceptional experiences to all our passengers and serves as an inspiration for us to continue elevating our standards, ensuring MIA remains a leader in its category." KAA Acting Managing Director, Henry Ogoye stated.
