A 41-seater matatu was on Friday, March 15, involved in a grisly accident between the Masimba and Kiboko areas along Mombasa road.

According to survivors, the driver of the mini-bus was trying to overtake another vehicle at a bridge, losing control of the vehicle.

The vehicle, which rolled off the bridge into a ditch, left several injured. The number is yet to be confirmed.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a watchdog from the Sikika Road Safety Organisation following up on the incident noted that several of the injured passengers had been rushed to various hospitals around the area.

“I’m yet to confirm the exact number and exact hospitals where the injured have been transferred to. However, no fatalities have been recorded, but there are some severe injuries and a few minor injuries," he stated.

Police officers are yet to arrive at the scene, where several people are lying on the ground in pain.

In the images making rounds on social media, the front and back of the bus are completely totalled. Some seats are strewn across the accident scene, with almost all windows missing.

According to witnesses, the place is a known blackspot as the bridge is built on a narrow road.

Motorists have been warned, as a traffic snarl-up has developed following crowds of people gathered on the scene. Heavy-duty lorries, personal vehicles and other matatus are stuck on that particular section of the road.

In a similar incident, thirty-eight students and ten teachers escaped death after the bus they were travelling in lost control and crashed at the Nithi River bridge in Tharaka Nithi County.

The driver of the Itoleka Girls School lost control after the brake system failed, forcing him to swerve off the road before hitting the bridge. The bus was ferrying the students back to Kitui after participating in ongoing drama festivals in Meru.
