The Directorate of Criminal Investigations will, for the first time, promote 513 of its officers immediately after graduating from special training.

The agency's Director, Mohammed Amin, on Monday, March 18, officiated the opening of Police Constables to Corporals and Corporals to Sergeants promotional courses.

According to the agency, this is the first time in DCI history that they are training its troops for promotional purposes.

The training, which is taking place at the  National Police College - Magadi Field Campus, will last for four months to prepare the team for new responsibilities.

The trainees are constables seeking promotions to the corporals stage and corporals looking to become sergeants.

"This is the first time in the history of the DCI that the Directorate is training its officers for promotions, following the Inspector General's approval that the third stone of the three services under the NPS umbrella had the capacity to train and promote its staff," stated DCI.

"Immediately after the approval of the request made by DCI Chief Amin, another cohort of police sergeants secured their admission to the National Criminal Investigations Academy (NCIA) at South C, and are halfway into the completion of their senior sergeant course."

Speaking at the event, Amin challenged the trainees to embrace determination, teamwork, and discipline insisting that the training was structurally objective, and was meant to nurture them into becoming the future commanders.

The event was attended by the General Service Unit Commandant Eliud Lagat, GSU commanding officer of Magadi Field Campus Charles Naibei, and training director Edwin Kamau.

In 2022, the National Police Service was rocked with tensions after 1,000 police officers who had attained higher education certificates were reportedly locked out of promotions.

At the time, talks were rife that the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome should approve the new courses for promotions of the officers.

Initially, the service conducted interviews for officers seeking to climb the career ladder with requirements including academic certificates.

The DCI in 2022 mandated graduates pursuing promotions to ensure that they scored at least a C+ (plus) in high school while those who fell short and attained degrees through bridging courses to attend PC-CPL (police corporal to constable) in order to be eligible.
