The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued guidelines to schools regarding the transportation of students for the Easter Holiday.
In a statement dated Friday, March 29, NTSA directed schools intending to transport students with their buses to ensure they possess the requisite documentation before commencing the exercise.
Among the mandatory items schools are required to have include a valid Road Service Licence (RSL) and a valid inspection certificate.
On the other hand, school buses are required to be fitted with a speed limiter just as is the case with Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).
Similarly, the schools were directed to ensure that their drivers have the requisite driver's licence and a valid PSV badge.
"As our children head home for the holidays, remember school transport like all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), must have the items.
"We urge all schools to ensure compliance with traffic rules and regulations," read the statement in part.
NTSA released the statement as schools near the end of the first term. According to the school calendar that was released by the Ministry of Education, schools will close on April 5.
On the other hand, schools will reopen for the second term on Tuesday, April 29.
Additionally, the directive also comes at a time when the government has intensified crackdowns across major roads in the country owing to the recent surge in road accidents.
In recent weeks, the accidents have also involved school buses with over 10 students including those in universities dying in the process.
Meanwhile, motorists have been advised to adhere to traffic rules during the Easter festivities given that some Kenyans are travelling to reunite with their families during this period.
