Eight people lost their lives on the morning of Tuesday after a van rammed into a truck around the Ngata area on the busy Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

Witnesses revealed that the vehicle was heading to Kisii from Nairobi when it hit the lorry that had stalled by the roadside.

Kenyans.co.ke got pictures of the mangled-up van which had 15 occupants. One person was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Police were immediately deployed to the accident scene where they helped redirect traffic which was quickly building up.

A witness told the press that the van was moving at a high speed when it hit the lorry that stalled last night.

"We have helped the police retrieve the bodies which have been taken to the mortuary while the injured were rushed to the hospital," he stated.

"To all drivers plying this route, let's pay attention to the steep slope by being on high alert regarding the breaks."

The accident happened after an earlier one involving a Probox and a lorry resulted in the death of six people. The Probox was broken in half upon impact.

The night accident occurred along the Kericho-Nakuru Highway while the driver attempted to overtake a fleet of vehicles.

The accidents come two days after Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen called on all Kenyans to be responsible when driving.

He argued that the country is not experiencing a surge in accidents in the recent weeks noting that the spike has been gradual since 2004.

"I am distraught by road accidents and we thank Michuki for bringing order on the road including safety belts. What we have not been able to stop are road accidents," he explained.

"When Mwai Kibaki took over the reins, we were losing 3,000 people in 2004. In 2009, we lost 4,600. The figure dropped slightly but spiked. In 2022, we lost 4,650 people. Last year, the figure dropped to 4,300. Right now, we have lost 1,213 in 3 months. In the same period, we lost 1,146."
