Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Tuesday, April 9, directed road and transport agencies to ensure that all busy roads within Nairobi County have clear markings.

The CS further ordered the relevant authorities to ensure that all the roads located within Nairobi and its environs are also backed with proper signage.

According to Murkomen, the above measures are aimed at averting the increasing cases of road crashes in Nairobi and its environs.

Following the directive, CS Murkomen called on motorists and pedestrians to observe traffic rules when using the roads.

The directives followed a consultative meeting by the CS and a section of leaders from Nairobi County where the leaders discussed the state of roads and rail infrastructure within the county.

“We are working with Parliament and development partners to speed up the completion of pending road construction works in Nairobi,” the Transport CS noted.

"Fast-track the roll-out of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to decongest the City and enhance seamless movement of people within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area," Murkomen added.

Murkomen's directive comes amidst the surge in road accidents across various busy roads in the country with the latest accident taking place at the Ngata area along the Nakuru- Eldoret highway.

The accident which occurred on April 9, and involved a Toyota van and a lorry left 8 people dead with the police noting that 7 others sustained serious injuries.

Similarly, on April 8, just hours before the Nakuru accident, six people were in the Duka Moja area on the Kericho - Nakuru highway.

Kericho East Sub County Police Commander Peter Mutuma stated that two people sustained injuries in the 7:30 pm accident and were rushed to the Kericho County Referral Hospital.

While detailing the accident, a witness claimed that the truck was heading towards Kericho town while the Probox vehicle was heading to Nakuru when the two vehicles were involved in head-on-collusion.
