Armed Thugs Hold Family Hostage, Steal Airtime Cards

A family in Gilgil was on Sunday left traumatised after armed thugs held them hostage for three hours before escaping with cigarettes, airtime cards and cash.

The men, who were armed with machetes and a gun, were said to have taken the store owner and his family siege, as they stole the items and Sh100,000 from the cash register.

According to a witness, Jacob Kamau, the dramatic incident left the family emotionally disturbed as they watched the ordeal unfold.

“The scene was like a movie as the family was held hostage for hours while the businessman was tied and could barely speak after the ordeal,” he said.

The businessman screamt for help after the thugs had left, prompting the residents to launch an immediate search for the thugs.

The vehicle used by the robbers was found a few kilometres from the scene, where Police towed it away before being burned down by residents.

Officers at Gilgil Police Station said the car would be dusted for fingerprints and that a manhunt had been launched on the thugs.
