Babu Owino Aks For Permission And Provision To Burn Down Abortion Clinics

The controversial University of Nairobi student union chairman Babu Owino is once again on the spotlight, this time seeking to have all abortion services clinic in Nairobi burnt down.

He made his request Tuesday, through a letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta and copied to the Health and Interior cabinet secretaries, the Chief Justice, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, Senator Mike Sonko and the Sauti Sol band.

Owino said that if given the go ahead, he will start by razing down a clinic located at Afya center, which he claimed provides the said services.

Citing the example of a student from the university who almost lost her life last month, the student leader raised concerns over numerous abortions being procured in Kenya.

The new constitution passed in 2010 allows for safe termination of pregnancy in such cases as described "in the opinion of a trained health professional, there is need for emergency treatment, or the life or health of the mother is in danger, or if permitted by any other written law.”

Abortion otherwise remains illegal in Kenya.

This has however not stopped the practice as many back streets clinics perform the procedures, putting the lives of many young girls who make the larger percentage of the clients in danger.

According to The Star, Owino stated in his letter, “I look forward to your prompt response and provision of enough petrol.”
