Coffin, Body Stolen During Burial

The body of a woman in Bungoma County went missing on Tuesday night after a scuffle ensued at the burial grounds where she was to be laid to rest.

Jane Omella, who died in Mombasa County days ago, was transported to her rural home for her burial ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, but could not be laid to rest following a disagreement over part of the land where she was to be buried.

The disagreement reportedly turned violent prompting police officers to be called at the scene, where they fired tear-gas canisters to disperse the crowd.

“I brought the body all the way from Mombasa while crying then getting here we find people fighting and police throwing teargas. I have cried and now I am tired,” said one of the relatives.

After the crowd was dispersed, the grieving family realised that the body and coffin were missing.

Relatives accused a man who claimed ownership of the land of being behind the sudden disappearance of the woman's body. The deceased's family argued that parents of the late Omella, were buried on the disputed land hence the deceased should also be buried on the same ground.

The ceremony was suspended till the body of the deceased was found.
