In what has thrown the education sector across Kenya's coastal region into crisis, five dormitories from five secondary schools in Kilifi county were burnt down.
The well coordinated and almost sequential arsons saw three dormitories in Chumani Secondary School, Dzitoni secondary school and Lutsangani secondary school completely razed to the ground.
Fires in Chasimba Secondary and Jaribuni Boys Secondary dormitories did partial damage.
According to The Nation, the fire at Jaribuni Boys only burnt two beds and four mattresses before being put out by security guards.
Four beds were burnt in Chasimba Secondary.
The Tuesday night incidents are said to have started at around 8pm in Dzitsoni Secondary followed by Chumani Secondary, about half an hour later.
The fires are said to have taken up the sequence in an order that saw a male dormitory in Lutsangani burn early Wednesday morning as students were headed for breakfast.
There has been a widespread unrest among students in the area in the recent times.
Threats to burn down the school by students from Malindi Girls High School and Vitengeni Girls Secondary saw the schools close town and students sent home.
Kilifi Police boss Joshua Ole Leina while confirming the incident, said the fires were being treated as arsons organized by the students.
This could be one of the biggest losses caused by students in what is appearing to be a worrying trend, spreading across the country.
