CS Matiang'i Presides Over Release of University Education Audit Report, Promises Prompt Implementation

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has finally completed the first step in the much-awaited cancellation of fake degrees.

On Thursday, Dr Matiang’i presided over the release of a report that audited the quality of education in universities in Kenya, including the adherence to the standards set by the Council of University Education (CUE).

Earlier in the year, Matiang’i stated that the audit would form the basis of reforms in the higher education sector.

“We are going to take difficult and painful decisions to restore order in university education. We cannot have people getting degrees without learning for it,” he stated in a January interview.

On Thursday, the Education CS assured that the reforms would be as per the law, adding that his ministry did not have any powers to recall degrees since universities are supposed to be run by their respective councils.

To avoid legal challenges in the reform process, Matiang’i directed the formation of a joint committee that will include officials in his ministry and from the respective university councils to help expedite the reforms.

Already, the Commission for University Education has suffered a setback after the High Court on Wednesday suspended it from accrediting degree programmes.
