Education CS Fred Matiang’i Warns of Crackdown on Universities

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has warned that the Ministry is set to make a decision that will be "painful and difficult" for some universities to accept.

The Education CS affirmed that he had instructed the Commission for University Education (CUE) to conduct a special audit that could lead to the closure of some institutions and revocation of already awarded degrees.

“I have to prepare the public that some of the reforms we are going to carry out are going to be painful and very difficult to accept. We will have to implement the necessary reforms to restore the credibility of our education system,” said Matiang’i.

Dr Matiang'i observed that cheating in university examinations was so rampant to the extent that it had become a way of life and a cancerous culture.

He expressed concern that some universities were admitting students who did not meet the minimum university entry requirement of C+ or were offering degree programmes that were not approved.

The CS stated that the far-reaching investigation targeting the quality of programmes run by both public and private universities is expected to end mid this month.

He warned that the violation of standards by dishonest individuals was hurting the reputation of the country and the education system in general.

Matiang'i has been widely praised after breaking the record and releasing both KCPE and KCSE exam results in a record time of less than one month after the exams were done.

Even more, minimal irregularities were witnessed during the national examinations whose results left many surprised.
