Ex-Police Detained Over Musician's Death

Police in Kericho have been ordered to detain ex-police officer Eric Musila who has been mentioned as the main suspect in the murder of his wife.

Musila appeared on Thursday before a Kericho Law Court and was charged with the murder of Kalenjin musician Chelele (Diana Chemutai) after which he was remanded until February 8 when the case would be mentioned.

The former officer was arrested on Wednesday after detectives traced him to a Nakuru hotel where he had been hiding.

Officers investigating the case revealed how they had been tracking Musila's location through his mobile phone since the body of the deceased was found.

"He travelled from Nairobi on Tuesday January 5 to Kericho where the signals show he moved from one bar to another and kept on calling a number belonging to the deceased," said an officer.

He further revealed that call signals showed the two meeting at one of the joints in Kericho before both of their phones were switched off on Wednesday.

"It shows that the two met as phone signals pointed they were in the same place and after sometime the phones went off on Wednesday night," he said.

According to the detectives, the musician was allegedly killed between the day Musila contacted her and the day he traveled from Kericho to Nakuru.

"The communication indicates that the suspect came into contact with the deceased on the night of January 6 and the murder took place thereafter,” the detective said.

The detectives further were puzzled by the fact that the former police officer had not bothered to contact Chelele's family despite news of her demise being broadcast in most media houses.

"Musila must be having a hand in the murder because it does not add up for him not to go to view her body or console the family," the officer questioned.

The body of the deceased was found at her desserted home in Chepalungu, Bomet County, with deep cut wounds. Preliminary investigations indicated that she had been murdered at a different location.
