A documentary titled Kanjo Kingdom has exposed how Nairobi County Askaris illegally collect millions from business people in the city.
The video aired on Sunday on KTN shows how two of the askaris who have already been suspended and arrested transacted more than Sh20 Million within a period of three years.
According to the investigative piece, one of the officers identified as Akasi Ambasi alias Wasi Wasi received more than Sh18 Million from 2013 to 2016 through his M-Pesa mobile bank account.
In 2013 alone, the officer's account was credited with Sh2.8 Million, an amount which tripled to Sh6.6 Million in the following year. The records further indicated that Ambasi received Sh8.8 Million in 2015.
Another officer only identified as Alfred Marenya alias Tall Brown who is believed to be among the senior extortionist, is said to have cashed in Sh4.8 Million in 2015 only, which contradicted his official monthly income.
As per the current salaries, Director of Nairobi Inspectorate indicated that the officers were approximately earning Sh30,000 from the County, meaning they were receiving more than 24 times their annual salaries.
The report pointed out that the money was extorted from hawkers and small businesses around the city, with operators being forced to part with the bribes to avoid being arrested and manhandled by the kanjos.
The four-series documentary revealed adverse brutality by the County inspectorate officers which eventual led to suspension of the named culprits, Ambasi and Marenya included, as confirmed by Governor Evans Kidero.
