Kidero Suspends Rogue County Askaris After TV Expose'

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero on Wednesday announced the suspension of five County officials after an investigative documentary exposed the brutality on city hawkers by the staff.

“Officers involved in shameful extortion acts suspended. More action to be taken if found culpable,” Kidero stated.

The officers include Angeline Kamatha, Bernard Gathauthau, Ambani Akasi, Julius Ochieng and Alfred Maranya.

The television expose' by investigative journalists John Allan Namu and Mohammed Ali, revealed the shocking brutality of Nairobi City Inspectorate officers on the capital's traders and the everyday extortion by the askari's commonly known as kanjo.

The 3 part series angered Kenyans who sharply condemned the askari's constant bribery, cruelty that has been reported to have even caused deaths among traders.

After the investigative piece was aired Kidero promised Ali that he would take action against the identified officials.

@Moha_jichopevu I watched your piece tonite. Very disturbing. Action will be taken. Watch this space. #KibubusaaChaKanjo @jmueje

However, Kidero's move to suspend the county workers was not received well by a section of the public who criticised him for acting, only when the journalists had publicised the vice yet it had been going on for a long time.

He was also bashed for giving them a minor punishment as suspension yet they acted ruthlessly towards the hawkers.
