Uhuru Sets Date to Celebrate Ruto ICC Victory

The Government has announced a day for the country to celebrate the termination of cases against Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Through a statement sent to the media, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that the nation would hold a thanksgiving rally in Nakuru on April 16.

“I call upon all Kenyans of goodwill to join us at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru on Saturday 16th April for a thanksgiving ceremony,” the President stated.

Kenyatta recounted that after his case at ICC was dropped in 2014, he decided not to hold any celebrations until Ruto and Sang's cases at the Hague-based court were terminated, an eventuality that came to pass Tuesday evening when the ICC judges ruled that the two had no cases to answer.

The Head of State lauded the court's decision stating that it would give him and Ruto enough time to concentrate on serving the nation.

“For my Deputy and I, this focuses us fully on the affairs of running the state, a mandate given to us by the people of Kenya,” he added.

The ICC trial Chamber made a majority ruling that Ruto and Sang did not have cases to answer, with Judge Chile Eboe Osuji terming their prosecution a mistrial.

The decision sparked celebrations with the two thanking the court for setting them free, adding that they were innocent in the crimes against humanity charges that Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda had levelled against them.

Following the termination of his case, Sang could not withhold his joy and even broke into tears as he thanked Kenyans for supporting him during the 6-year court battle.
