Joho's BCom Degree from Gretsa University Among Those Investigated in Matiang'i 's Reforms

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho's degree, awarded by Gretsa University in December last year, is among those that were the subject of an audit ordered by Education CS Fred Matiang'i.

Gretsa University confirmed that it had been audited by the Council for University Education (CUE) last month.

The university, however, defended Joho stating that his Bachelor's degree in Commerce (Human Resource specialization) was genuine.

The University Vice Chancellor Kuria Thuo added that the Mombasa Governor had been a compliant student who registered in 2014 and went to pursue the programme through distant learning.

“Late last month, the university underwent a quality audit by the Commission for University Education...we have not received any harassment or instruction from anyone to cancel any of our graduates’ degrees,” Gretsa VC stated.

The Education CS received the audit report on Thursday where he also announced the formation of a joint task force between his ministry officials and the university councils, that would then handle the implementation phase.

Joho, who had another controversial degree certificate from Kampala International University, did not attend the Gretsa graduation with critics speculating he may have done so because there was an issue with its authenticity.

Since then, his political opponents have been pushing for the cancellation of the degree alleging that it was fake.

On the other hand, his supporters and admirers have claimed there was a plot by the Jubilee government to rob him of a genuine academic credential.
