Jubilee Leaders Divided Over Peter Kenneth's Nairobi Gubernatorial Bid

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has sparked a rift in the Jubilee Party following his recent attacks on fellow gubernatorial aspirant Peter Kenneth.

Sonko's rejection of Kenneth as the newest entrant in the Nairobi governorship race has seemingly angered a section of leaders who have expressed support for the former Gatanga Member of Parliament.

On one side, Sonko's faction, which also includes nominated MP Johnson Sakaja, Dennis Waweru (Dagoretti South) and former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, has vowed they would not allow Kenneth to vie for the seat on a Jubilee ticket.

On Monday, Sonko ordered Kenneth to first apologise for supporting the prosecution of President Uhuru Kenyatta at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

However, another team of leaders from Murang'a County has emerged to express support for the former presidential aspirant, arguing that he has a right vie for the Nairobi seat.

Led by Kiharu lawmaker Irungu Kang'ata, the leaders expressed disappointment that the Sonko-led leaders were rejecting Kenneth for being from Murang'a County.

"It is very sad to see leaders, whom we presume to have matured politically, fighting our son because he has declared interest in a seat he has the right to vie. They will be shocked about how much interest Murang'a people have in the city," he said.

The same was supported by his Kandara counterpart Alice Wahome and Kigumo's Jamleck Kamau who asserted that Kenneth was a known performer who had a right to contest for the position.

“Nairobi belongs to all of us as it is the capital city so anyone can vie. Voters will decide who they want to govern them,” he stated.

Others who have supported Kenneth's bid to be the next Nairobi Governor are Women Rep Rachael Shebesh and seven city legislators.
