Kenyans Block Kenya-Namanga Border Protesting against Arrest of their Counterparts By Tanzanian Authorities

Kenyans living in Namanga on Monday held demonstrations against Tanzanian President John Magufuli claiming that he had deported their fellow citizens.

This was after Tanzanian authorities arrested three Kenyans on Friday charging them with being in the country illegally.

The angry protesters blocked the Kenya-Tanzania boarder and invaded businesses owned by Tanzania citizens causing loss of property. They also harassed Tanzanian barmaids working in Kenyan clubs and took off with their phones.

During the protests, the agitated locals frog-marched the Tanzanians across the boarder back to their country.

Kajiado County Commissioner Harsama Kello condemned the protests highlighting that Kenyans should ensure they have valid immigration documents when they relocate to foreign countries.

In January, the Tanzanian government enforced laws to deport foreigners who did not have residential and work permits.

Kenyans were enraged by this move claiming that most of them would fall victim as authorities had failed to renew their permits.

The High Commissioner, however, maintained that the operation was a routine enforcement of the Tanzanian Immigration Act of 1995 and it did not target any nationality.

Mr Kello disclosed that a closed-door meeting was being held in Namanga by top officials from the immigration department and local police officers with an aim to restore order.
