Kenya's Trending Topics on Tuesday February 14th 2017

Valentine's day is a day to celebrate love and romance and Kenyans were not left behind as they discussed this topic.

However, the discussion was not limited to valentines as other topics dominated the conversation.

Here are the day’s trending topics:

1. #Valentines, #ValentineNi

This hashtag saw corporates and individuals join the bandwagon with various ideas and products as they celebrated this International day of love.

2. #HealthCrisisKE,  #Doctorsjailed

The trend started as a discussion on the continuing doctors strike and the subsequent jailing of Kenya Medical Practioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) officials.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka's tweets on #HealthCrisisKE shared by those who support the doctors, placing this conversation on the trending topics.

3. #ASystemIsComingDown

This trend was mainly propagated by critics of the Jubilee government who highlighted all manner of perceived or real failures by the current administration.

The conversation was further driven by a satirical cartoon from the The Standard, depicting President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto's valentine gift to prospective voters.

The cartoon caused excitement among Opposition supporters and was widely used to spread this hashtag.

4. #UASUKUSU

This trend appeared as Public University lecturers demonstrated in Nairobi's Central Business District.

The lecturers, under the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), are currently on strike and are demanding an increase in their pay.

5. Migingo Island

This trend astarted after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni deployed Ugandan soldiers to the disputed Migingo Island.

The island has been claimed by Kenya with a raging debate on the boundaries.

6. #FallInLoveAgain

This is another hashtag that was inspired by valentine’s day.

Kenyans reminisced on the first time they fell in love by sharing humorous tweets and memes.
