Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel Arrested

Laikipia North Member of Parliament (MP) Mathew Lempurkel has been arrested.

The ODM MP was reportedly nabbed on Tuesday afternoon just a few minutes before addressing a press conference to speak on the deteriorating level of security in Laikipia county.

Lempurkel is said to have been whisked away and is being interrogated at the DCI headquarters over increased cases of invasion into private property in his constituency.

The arrest came as Deputy President William Ruto was touring the region to assess the security situation following the recent attack which claimed the life of British former soldier Tristan Voorspuy.

During the visit, Ruto issued a strong warning to those orchestrating the attack on private property in the region.

“The sanctity of private property and the right to life must be protected. Those breaching peace and causing deaths will face the law,” he stated.

The MP has in the past denied any involvement in the attacks where invaders target tourist lodges and destroy property.

Lempurkel has also severally crossed paths with the authorities on numerous accusations.

Last year, he was charged on allegations of physically assaulting nominated lawmaker Sarah Korere at Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery's office.
