Lecturers Strike Called Off After Signing of Collective Bargaining Agreement

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) on Monday called off the lecturers' strike which had paralysed learning in public institutions for 54 days.

The lecturers ended the strike after signing a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that will see their basic pay raised by 17.5% and house allowance by 3.9%.

Learning in all Universities is expected to resume on Tuesday.

The lecturers, led by UASU and the Kenya University Staff Union (KASU), downed their tools in January demanding for implementation of a 2013-2017 Agreement.

The government first offered Sh10 Billion for them to resume work, an offer the Unions dismissed insisting on full implementation of the CBA.

The State had said the money would have been used in streamlining basic salaries and house allowances of the University staff.

Last week, the lecturers rejected a second salary increase offer from the government of 18 per cent insisting that they would only take a 30 per cent salary increase per year for four years.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i then warned that no lecturer would be paid their salaries until they resume work.
