MCA's Assistant Disappears After Sh5 Million Cheques Bounced

A Ward Manager in Vihiga County has been accused of signing 30 bursary cheques which amounted to Sh5 Million for various students, yet he was not a signatory to the ward's bursary fund account.

The students studying at Senende High School, Shamakhokho Secondary, Moi and Mount Kenya University had their cheques rejected by various banks due to irregular signatures.

Shamakhokho MCA Richard Muhiga avoided to comment on the actions of his assistant Vincent Sultan, but promised to delve into the matter after investigations were completed.

"We have noted the anomaly and the case is being investigated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in the county. We will only make conclusive remarks after the officers are through with their investigations," said Muhiga.

Muhiga however added, that they learnt of the disappearance of the ward's bursary cheque book and that his ward manager was signing cheques that he was not authorized.

The MCA said that he wrote to the County Assembly Clerk asking her to stop his staff's salary until the matter affecting his personal assistant was settled.

It is reported that the actions of the ward manager, who is currently on the run, affected needy students depending on the bursary.

Misappropriation and embezzlement of public funds has become a matter of high concern in the counties and the national goverment. On Sunday it was revealed that the government planned to spend Sh37.5 Million on 1000 bars of soap to be distributed to victims of the El Nino rains.
