Meru Governor to Battle Ruto for Presidency

Meru Governor Peter Munya has been endorsed to run for presidency come 2022 by delegates of the Alliance Party (APK).

Munya was on Saturday tasked with forming another political party after leader of APK Senator Kiraitu Murungi, announced dissolution of the party to join Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP).

The more than 2000 delegates who attended the conference held at Meru Sports Club, said that they had confidence in the qualifications of the Governor.

During his address, Munya took issue with the move to dissolve APK saying it jeopardized democracy adding that it would also take Kenyans back to a one-party regime.

He also said that such a move would deny people the voice to air diverse views on issues, as it happenned with the dominance of Orange Democratic Party in Nyanza.

“Kiraitu was part of those who fought for democracy in 1992. We are astonished that he is now yearning to fold up APK and have it absorbed into JAP,” he said.

The delegates also faulted the initiative arguing that having a different party in the region would not reduce the support for President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017 elections.

“It is therefore extremely reckless for Senator Murungi to deny the community an opportunity to belong to this party,” said the delgates in a statement read by a representative.

The Meru Governor is reported to have parted ways with Senator Murungi who reportedly has received support by a section of leaders in the region to vie for the county's Governorship in 2017.

Governor Munya announced that he would created another Party by December which would serve as his political vehicle in his presidential bid come 2022.

If Munya's plans stand, he would be in the race for the highest office on the land alongside Deputy President William Ruto whom JAP has already fronted to take up the mantle from President Kenyatta.
