More MPs Supporting Uhuru's Impeachment - ODM

Claims that the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) was having trouble collecting 117 signatures for their impeachment motion against President Uhuru Kenyatta are unfounded.

Orange Democratic Movement Chairman John Mbadi, on Sunday insisted that the process was going on well and around 80 Members of Parliament had appended their signatures.

Mbadi added that the motion was not ready for submission to the Speaker of the National Assembly, as more CORD affiliated MPs were expected to offer their support.

He also said that they had consulted a legal team and the motion may be presented at the end of this week.

“We have consulted our legal experts and they have assured us that the grounds easily make Uhuru impeachable,” Mbadi said.

Members of Jubilee have however insisted that the motion would not succeed. Majority Leader Aden Duale vowed to rally all Jubilee MPs to defeat the motion.

“We are not scared at the desperate attempts by the Opposition that is keen on salvaging its dwindling following among Kenyans. That motion, if it ever gets the numbers, which I highly doubt, will be defeated in the first round,” Duale said.

CORD's Co-Principal Kalonzo Musyoka recently told Kenyans that the only way to solve their problems was to successfully impeach the President.

"The time has come for Kenyans to unite and remove Jubilee from power. This should start with the impeachment motion against the President so that impunity can be dealt with,” Kalonzo said.

The motion of no-confidence is seen as a supremacy battle between the two major coalitions, Jubilee and CORD, which both require support from smaller parties in order to successfully promote their agendas.

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma who is also a CORD member recently said that he believed United Republican Party members would vote with them if the motion was well presented .

"I'm certain URP MPs will vote with us. How the motion passes in the House is a political game. We cannot draw up such a motion without a well-laid-out strategy," said Kaluma.

The President's impeachment plan by the Opposition continues as the country faces financial crisis, with reports indicating that legislatures and civil servants among other government workers are yet to receive their September salaries.

Teachers have also threatened to go back on strike if their September salaries continue to be withheld.
