Nairobi County Government on Tuesday removed billboards within the city centre over unpaid levies amounting to Sh500 million.
Officials conducting the operation started at Kenyatta Avenue and Limuru Road.
The directive is said to have been given by Governor Evans Kidero on Monday evening.
The Nairobi government said that operations of the county had stalled due to lack of funds yet they had money owed to them in millions by companies advertising in the city.
According to the head of operations, John Ntoiti the companies had been given warning letters but had yet to settle their bills.
He said that the advertising spots were on high demand and would be given to other companies willing to pay.
He noted, however, that some companies had paid the levies through advertising firms but the agencies had not paid the county government.
The Standard reports that Aga Khan University Hospital's Dental Clinic billboard was among the adverts pulled down.
