Only 12 Signatures Now Needed For Uhuru Impeachment Motion

An initiative to impeach President Uhuru Kenyatta has rallied 105 MPs who have signed a motion to remove him from office, over claims of violating the constitution.

The draft motion moved by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Chairman John Mbadi, is expected to be concluded this week and introduced in the National Assembly for debate soon.

According to the Kenya constitution, at least a third or 117 of the 349 MPs are required to support before being presented in Parliament for debate.

“Those who thought we were joking should be very afraid because the train left the station a long time ago,” said Mbadi on Wednesday at Parliament Buildings.

The initiative is being spearheaded by an ODM committee constituting; CORD leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetangula and is co-chaired by Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama and Siaya's James Orengo among others.

The motion states that the President’s refusal to pay teachers the 50-60 per cent salary increase as ordered by the court, is a solid reason for him to be removed from office.

It further highlights that President Kenyatta defied court orders by calling for the destruction of a ship in Mombasa that was suspected to be ferrying drugs, and accuses him of playing favourites by defending Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru

“The President has resisted calls that she steps aside for investigations over the loss of Sh791 Million at the National Youth Service that is under her watch, yet other Cabinet Secretaries have been suspended for less serious allegations,” the draft motion reads in part.

Upon finalisation of the motion by the ODM committee, it would then await approval from the House clerk and the Speaker, Justin Muturi.

However, members of Jubilee Coalition insisted that the motion would not succeed with Majority Leader Aden Duale vowing to rally all Jubilee MPs to defeat the motion.

“We are not scared at the desperate attempts by the Opposition that is keen on salvaging its dwindling following among Kenyans. That motion, if it ever gets the numbers, which I highly doubt, will be defeated in the first round,” Duale said.

ODM is seeking support from other parties with a section of  United Republican Party members promising to vote in favour of the motion if well presented.

"I'm certain URP MPs will vote with us. How the motion passes in the House is a political game. We cannot draw up such a motion without a well-laid-out strategy," said Homa Bay MP Peter Kaluma.
