President Kenyatta's Reaction on Monica Juma's Rejection

President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed his 'profound' disappointment with the National Assembly’s decision to reject the nomination of Amb. Dr. Monica Juma as Secretary to the Cabinet.

In a statement sent on his behalf by State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu the President has said he is "deeply disappointed" that the National Assembly chose to reject her despite acknowledging that she is highly qualified and competent and indeed represents the Kenyan professionalism and dedication to service.

President Kenyatta maintained that her nomination was informed by the distinction and success she has earned serving the Nation as an Ambassador to Ethiopia and, Permanent Representative to the African Union, Defence PS, and in her current position as Interior.

163 MPs voted against, while 55 voted in favour of her nomination for Secretary to the Cabinet post.

The rejection by the MPs followed a recommendation report by the Parliamentary Committee on Security and National Administration.

The Asman Kamama led Committee rejected MS Juma's nomination citing high levels of disrespect in a letter she reportedly wrote to the National assembly clerk complaining about legislators’ frequent visits to her office.

In the said letter Dr. Juma complains about frequent visits by the lawmakers to her office to demand transfers, employment or requests for State workers to serve in certain stations.

The Interior PS in her letter indicated that honouring the legislators' requests was not sustainable and constituted a breach of the civil service code of regulation.
