Raila Reveals How He Helped IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan

CORD leader Raila Odinga has stated that he helped Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Issack Hassan get the position he holds.

Addressing a rally in Garissa on Saturday, Odinga disclosed that he is the one who proposed Hassan's name to be included in the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC).

The Opposition leader revealed that he also played a key role in ensuring Hassan became Chairman of IEBC when the body was formed in 2011.

Odinga further denied claims that he had a personal agenda in the push for the restructuring of IEBC, noting that the bid is motivated by a desire for fair elections.

“We have a strong team that is ready to face and defeat Jubilee in 2017. We, however, need a level playing ground and we are sure the Hassan-led team cannot deliver that; hence our push for their removal from office,” stated Odinga.

The former Prime Minister insisted that the CORD would resume demonstrations on Monday despite the police dismissing its notification for the protests.

CORD announced that the mass protests would continue from Monday after hopes of holding structured dialogue with the government collapsed.

On Sunday, Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome warned CORD supporters against taking to the streets, affirming that he would not allow business in the city to be interrupted.

He expressed concerns over intelligence reports which indicated that a group of Opposition supporters had planned to use grenades and conduct ethnic evictions in Kibera estate.

According to the police commandant, the authorities had already identified the people behind the plans and the vehicle they intended to use.

Mr Koome, however, assured that he had enough security agents and would not restrain from using necessary force to quash the protests.
