Rongai PSVs Face Backlash Following Grisly Langata Accident

Monday’s accident along Langata road in Nairobi that left one person dead and 20 others injured has put on the spot Rongai Public Service Vehicles plying the route.

The accident occurred when a matatu ferrying passengers from Ongata Rongai rolled after losing control near Uhuru Gardens, killing the passenger on the spot, Capital Fm reports.

According to Red Cross some of the injured passengers were taken to hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the car ran off after the accident and as Citizen Digital reports, police have launched a man hunt for him.

Following reports of the accident was allegedly caused by reckless driving, Nairobi residents have taken to social media asking that the matatus be held accountable for the accident.

Using the hash tag #ArrestRongaiMatatus some have complained that there have been too many accidents along the route caused by the drivers.

The matatu drivers have been accused of driving at life threatening speeds putting the life of passengers at risk.

They asked the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to intervene, adding that the government should take legal action against the owners and drivers of the matatus.

Here are some of the tweets:

By new NYS buses test them on Rongai route, ban all the ma3s eventually if it works. Safety first. @Ma3Route @NYS_Ke #ArrestRongaiMatatus

I am yet to understand why matatu drivers are always reckless. @ntsa should start vetting all matatus #ArrestRongaiMatatus

The  uproar comes barely two week after the NTSA suspended the licenses of Embassava Sacco commuter buses and matatus following an accident that left two people dead.

The accident is said to have been caused by reckless driving.
