Stop Spending More Than You Collect, Government Advised

Kenya's financial crunch has been blamed on the Government's inability to spend money within their means.

Finance Chair in the Council of Governors Wycliffe Oparanya, said that the financial crisis experienced in the country was caused by Government spending more than it already had.

"The Government is strained due to lack of funds. It is clear the Government is broke because it has over expenditure against limited funds collected as revenue. Tax collection is projected at Sh1.2 Trillion, yet the Government budget stands at Sh2.37 Trillion," said Oparanya.

The Kakamega Governor advised the State to focus on completing old tasks before initiating new projects.

Oparanya added that important functions at the county level were at a standstill since they had not received funds for three months.

"The Government owes counties arrears for August, September and October. This has put a halt on operations at the county level. We owe suppliers their money and some counties are unable to pay salaries," he said.

He also expressed that Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich should address this financial challenge.

The Parliamentary Budget Committee which is led by Mutava Musyimi recently held a meeting to raise concerns over the delays by the Treasury in disbursing funds to certain government departments, holding up payments for indispensable services like salaries.

Various Members of Parliament demanded that Rotich be summoned in order to explain why Parliament was broke.
