Tycoon Raj Devani Charged with Assaulting his Mother at Their Runda Home

One of Nairobi’s most notorious businessmen was on Wednesday charged with assaulting his 68-year old mother at their Runda home.

Raj Devani was arrested Tuesday and arraigned in court on Wednesday where he took a plea, denying that he assaulted his mother Bambi Harikrishna.

The prosecution had pushed for the tycoon to be denied bail based on previous records where he has pending warrants of arrests for failing to appear in court.

In 2012, Devani was arrested after he shot at the padlocks of Shimmers Plaza in Westlands as he sought to force entry into the building that he had owned but was later seized by National Bank of Kenya.

In the same year, he became the subject of a publicized and dramatic divorce case after he was accused of bribing immigration officials to deport his Russian wife.

The current warrant of arrest was issued by a Narok court where Devani was charged with damage of property worth Sh15 Million.

The businessman had taken an aerial game view when he became deranged, claiming that his children had been kidnapped.

He attacked the pilot and destroyed the aircraft, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing. The case has since stalled after he failed to make subsequent court appearances.

Devani owns the multi-billion Jade Petroleum Ltd which exports oil to Uganda and Rwanda.

The businessman has also been linked to the over Sh45 Billion fraud that led to the collapse of Imperial Bank.

His more famous brother, Yagnesh Devani, fled the country in 2009 after he was found to have masterminded the Sh7.6 Billion Triton scandal.
