Undercover Police Detective Testified How Joyce Akinyi Ran a Multi-million Drug Trafficking Ring

A Nairobi Court was on Wednesday shocked by the testimony of an undercover police officer who revealed how the wife of a prominent ODM politician operated a multi-million drug-trafficking business.

Undercover detective Humphrey Mwenda was testifying in a case where Joyce Akinyi, wife to former Budalangi MP and ODM Parliamentary aspirant Raphael Wanjala, is charged with trafficking heroin worth Sh4.2 Million.

Akinyi was arrested on March 25, 2015, at her Deep West Club in Nairobi West after the detectives were led there by her suspected accomplice, Alex Otieno.

Mwenda told the court that he and his colleagues had earlier arrested Otieno in Langata estate following a tip-off.

After his arrest, Otieno led the officers to another house where they found a bag containing a white substance they believed to be narcotics.

The house was established to belong to another suspect, Kelvin Oduor while the rent was provided by a Ms Risper Auma.

The detectives continued with interrogation on Oduor who further revealed that Ms Auma had called to ask him to deliver the white substance to Deep West.

“As we waited for backup from the Anti-Narcotics Unit, our team split into two. Two colleagues went with Otieno to arrest Mr Oduor and Ms Auma, while I and another officer remained to secure the house,” Mwenda testified.

The officers would later notice that Otieno kept on receiving calls, and when they asked who was contacting him, he reported that Akinyi was demanding for the substance to be delivered.

The undercover detectives then asked Otieno to make the delivery as they followed him to Deep West where he met Akinyi.

The police arrested Akinyi after she had received the substance, after which they searched her bag where they found an extra parcel of drugs wrapped in a black and white polythene paper.

The case will continue on April 10.
