University Elects Kenya's First Ever Female President

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kakamega County went on record as the first ever public university in the country, where a female student has been elected as the students' president.

Miss Winnie Opiyo Nyandiga trounced all the male competitors to head the university's Student Governing Council (SGC) after garnering 5787 votes against her closest rival Pius Angatia, who got 4063 votes.

“I thank my friends and family for believing in me and also for the much needed financial and moral support they offered me,” Winnie expressed during the swearing in on Saturday last week.

Miss Nyandiga together with her campaign crew dubbed 'Mwangaza Team' beat all the odds and broke the stereotypes to win in the hotly contested election, which was marred by ethnic alliances during the campaigns.

The Bachelor of Criminology student will now go down the history books as the first ever elected female President in public universities as most of her colleagues always settle to deputise their male counterparts.

Nyandiga has since received bundles of congratulatory messages from university students across the country over her win, which was announced last week on Friday.
