What ODM MP Will Lose After Whistling in Parliament

Ugunja Member of Parliament (MP) Opiyo Wandayi may find himself in trouble after disobeying the National Assembly rules, forcing the Speaker to order him out of the House.

Wandayi, who was thrown out of Parliament by the Sergeant-at-arms, is set to miss House sittings until December as dictated in Standing Order number 111.

The order used to eject the legislator from the House states: "If any members shall refuse to withdraw when required to do so, the Speaker shall order such Member to be removed and such Member shall thereupon without question put be suspended from the service of the House during the remainder of the Session".

According to the rule, a lawmaker who is on suspension should also forfeit all allowances paid during the period, a privilege that Wandayi may not enjoy until December when the current session ends.

The order further restricts Wandayi from accessing the precincts of Parliament in the remainder of Parliament's session.

The Unguja MP was ordered to leave the Chambers for gross misconduct after whistling and causing a scuffle as President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed the nation.

He remained adamant to leave even after being warned more than twice by Speaker Justin Muturi, who then directed that Wandayi be removed forcefully.
