Why CORD Cancelled Thursday Protests

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) on Wednesday called off its planned anti-IEBC demonstrations that had been slated for Thursday.

Tongareni Member of Parliament Eseli Simiyu announced that they had resolved to give more time for dialogue between CORD and Jubilee to solve the IEBC stalemate.

The MP said that talks between both parties on the electoral body had progressed impressively due to an enabling environment that had been created.

“Much progress has been made and a lot of ground covered on the sticking issues. We see political will and rays of good faith being exhibited by all parties and a conducive and enabling environment created, although we are yet to conclude discussions on a few but equally important issues,” Dr Simiyu acknowledged.

The legislator added that there were two or three issues both parties needed to resolve and would require a conducive environment to do so.

However, the Opposition warned that demonstrations would resume next week if no agreement shall have been struck by Sunday.

On the other hand, Siaya Senator James Orengo demanded the release of their colleagues who were being held at Pangani Police Station, claiming that the arrests had polluted the atmosphere for talks.

"The Judiciary is being intimidated by the Executive to make decisions to frustrate, intimidate and harass Opposition members. Dialogue cannot happen in such an environment when some of those being held are part of the dialogue process," Mr Orengo confirmed.
