Wrangles between Teachers and TSC Deepen as KNUT Calls for Strike

Teachers in Kenya are set to go on strike in September, once schools reopen.

This follows the move by the Teachers Service Commission to file an appeal at Supreme Court against a ruling by the court of appeal.

The Court of Appeal upheld the ruling by the Employment and Labour Relations Court, to pay teachers a salary increase of 50 to 60 per cent.

TSC, however, said it did not have the funds to pay the increase and hence moved to the Supreme Court.

Terming TSC's decision  “a punitive way to deny the teachers their pay” Kenya National Union Teachers Secretary-General Wilson Sossion said teachers will not go back to class come next term, if they are not given the increase.

He faulted the move saying that TSC should have written to the National Treasury, asking for the money.

Sossion was speaking on Sunday at KNUT offices in Nairobi.

Teachers have been in endless battles with TSC over salaries, leading to countless national strikes by the teachers over the years.
