Anne Waiguru Cleared in Sh791 Million Scandal

Former Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru has been cleared by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) in the infamous corruption scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS).

The scam involved the loss of Sh791 Million and an alleged conspiracy to steal Sh695 Million at the service.

In a letter signed by EACC boss Halake Waqo, the commission stated that after investigations they found no evidence to incriminate Waiguru in the unscrupulous dealings at the NYS.

The letter addressed to the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua confirmed that there were no grounds to prosecute the former CS.

“The commission has conducted investigations on various allegations touching on the National Youth Service and the Ministry of Devolution and National Planning. So far, our investigations have not established any evidence to warrant an adverse recommendation against the former Cabinet Secretary, Ms Anne Mumbi Waiguru,” the said letter read.

Waiguru expressed her joy over the relief stating: "I am extremely excited and grateful to God. The truth has finally come out against all the accusations that have been there since this matter came out”.

"I am out of town but I can tell you it is a relief for me and my family. It is a good thing to happen," Waiguru was quoted by the Standard.

Her lawyer, Ahmednasir Abdullahi also indicated: "This letter is a clear vindication of Waiguru against the totally baseless accusations leveled against her...she was a victim of political witch-hunt and intrigues”.

The EACC is now expected to present the findings to Director of Public Prosecution, Keriako Tobiko, as the powers to close the case rest with him.

Waiguru resigned last year amid mounting pressure from various quarters including the Opposition to leave office, after several graft cases were unearthed in her Ministry.

As she resigned, Waiguru revealed that she took the bold step since the corruption attacks on her were also affecting her family.
