3 Police Officers Linked to Human Trafficking

Three police officers were on Friday arrested after they were linked to rampant human trafficking cases recently reported in the country.

The security officers were trailed to Sololo in Marsabit County following suspicion that they illegally ferried 23 Ethiopian nationals before hiding them at a Nairobi estate.

Confirming the arrests, acting Marsabit County Police Commander Mark Wanjala, said the officers were taken to Moyale adding that further investigations into the matter would be conducted.

"The officers are under investigations in Moyale," Mr Wanjala was quoted by the Nation.

The three were apprehended after the Ethiopians were found hiding at Kahawa West estate on Wednesday. Residents who threatened to lynch the foreigners claimed thay they were criminals, prompting the police to intervene.

On Friday, about 114 aliens were nabbed in Nairobi without legal documents to support their presence in the country, raising fears of increased human trafficking.

This follows heightened surveillance by authorities over trafficking syndicates blamed for shipping foreigners to South Africa and Asia while using Kenya as a stopover.
