2 Important Announcements Expected From IEBC Today

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is expected to declare the results of the repeat Presidential election and announce the way forward regarding four counties where election failed to kick off.

Addressing the media on Sunday, IEBC Vice-Chair Conni Maina explained that the Commission was only yet to receive results from one constituency adding that they would work the entire night to ensure that the process is completed by today.

“We have received results from six constituencies now and we will be in a position to announce the final results tomorrow morning. We will work throughout the night to ensure that verification and tallying of the received results is completed.

"We will also make an announcement on whether we will conduct elections in the 25 constituencies where the election was postponed or not,”  she stated.

On Saturday, the Commission's Chair Wafula Chebukati had announced that the decision on the four counties would be delivered on Sunday since the commission was discussing the matter.

"We postponed the election in 25 constituencies because our staff and materials have not reached the final destination. As a commission, we have the entire infrastructure ready but we can’t do it alone. It involves security; we cannot put the lives of our staff at risk.

"We shall give a comprehensive reply tomorrow (Sunday) based on the Constitution and laws of the land,” Chebukati was quoted by Nation.

On Sunday, IEBC in a tweet noted that the announcement had been postponed to Monday morning.

On Thursday, Mr Chebukati postponed the repeat election in Homa Bay, Kisumu, Migori and Siaya to Saturday the 28th of October 2017 but was forced to postponed again to a later date after calls from the clergy.

According to Chebukati, the election had been postponed because the areas were faced with security challenges.
